Searching for authentic Icelandic sweater .. and found one here hand knit by a local granny. The shop is quaint with a decent selection of sizes. I had measurements for my honey and couldn’t find one xxl enough for his broad shoulders .. however. Mine is stunning!!! The ladies who work here were lovely .. 20 minute brisk walk from the cruise ship and easy to locate. Buy local artisan materials whenever possible.

Ample choice of beautifully detailed and well-constructed hand-knitted Icelandic wool sweaters, hats, mittens and scarves, made by the shop owner herself. I was happy to purchase everything that I needed here, and we left with two adult sweaters, a hat, mittens and scarf, plus the tax refund invoice that we requested (all you have to do is ask!).

Updating my review to add - that having since visited the Handknitting Association store in Reykjavik, I was very glad that I purchased from Fold Anna first, as her sweaters are not only cheaper (presumably due to having fewer overheads), but also have finer pattern detailing and appear made from better quality yarn. I imagine the Handknitting Association knitters are under financial pressure to construct their sweaters as quickly as possible, and therefore thick, rustic yarn is used, which knits up quickly but doesn’t look nearly as impressive.

Definitely avoid the big chains like Icewear with their “Designed in Iceland’ labels which generally mean machine-knitted in China from inferior wool.

THE place to go to get your AUTHENTIC Icelandic wool sweater! The shop owner Bergdis makes them by hand and even picked out a sweater that my wife absolutely loves and fits her perfectly! I’m sure we’ll be back next time we’re in Akureyri.

Such an awesome local made sweater and knit shop. The woman who owns it is the sweetest and is literally knitting behind the counter 🙂 we bought a sweater here that will definitely be keeping us warm through the winter! Feels good to buy from locals, made with local Icelandic sheep wool

Cute shop with lots of selection for unique and authentic Icelandic sweater. Has hats, mittens, slippers and other little trinkets. Worth it to stop in. 🙂

Let me start by saying her merchandise is nice and well made.

Now for why I gave it one star. After my friends and I spent over a grand in her store (including the purchase of a traditional sweater for myself) I learned she took orders for custom sweaters. I was excited to get a unique one so I decided to spend another $230 + shipping to the states on a second sweater. The owner, my friends, and myself picked out a 4 color pattern with the colors, Purple, Green, Cream, and Brown that looked oddly amazing together. I was excited for months to get it to only be utterly disappointed. She had changed my favorite color, this amazing deep purple, to add another green. It is not unique, it looks like just another bought off the shelf sweater. I hate it, and don't wear it or any of my other merchandise from her store bc they remind me of getting ripped off. It's been 2 years and I'm still sad about it.

Great sweaters, but unfortunately, I didn't receive a tax refund invoice, so I couldn't reclaim the tax. I tried calling the shop to have them send the invoice via email, but the number doesn't exist :/.. Unfortunately, they also didn't provide an email address. That's quite frustrating given the prices. However, the quality of the merchandise itself is great!
So if the owner of the shop is reading this - I would be very grateful if you could update your E-Mail adress or phone number.
