5/5
Only old 5star comments so here is an update, 1 ⭐️ is too much, total ripoff just
run away!!!
Wow wow this is really bad… so I will take the time to detail so you do not make the same mistake. .If you ever need proof that a monopoly is not good, this is a perfect example. Only hotels owner in town with 4-5 properties including the Torg etc, only other options are guesthouses which always come with shared bathroom , owner has one of these too apparently.
As you can read in other reviews the checkin is a pain, must find and go to a different hotel with a less than welcoming woman at reception on top of that after a long drive to the middle of nowhere.
Once you finally arrive at Horn, be ready to face the scary elevator (an industrial /cargo version) with no security especially for kids (see other reviews, we actually wondered how this can pass the tourism ministry safety check)
Actually the Torn is more looking like an old dated hostel converted in a 1-2 stars hotel, as a result the value for money is terrible.
150$ a night for this is a total ripoff. We raised our issue with front desk in the other hotel where to go for breakfast to talk to someone. The answer was, it is far here so everything is expensive, that is a lie confirmed by our Icelandic local friends. Yes this is far so to start real estate is quite cheap. This is just pure greed and a total disrespect for tourists.
Once in a very basic room (small tv, 3 local channels, kettle on the floor as there is no plug next to the old scratched wood table where it belongs). Then visit the bathroom, again very basic (shower with curtain, toilet and the “minusculest” hotel sink ever seen ie plane lavatory size, cannot even fill the kettle).
But the worse is yet to come with a strong persistent smell, a mix of urine and humidity, hard to dissipate as we could only open the tiny upper part of the window in bedroom. Did not make us feel the room was clean, we disinfected all we could with sanitising wipes. But odour stayed and prevented a good night rest on very very soft and old mattresses. We raised our concern with housekeeping and the answer was “yes we have this problem in all rooms” no wonder if you use the same pipe for used water from sink (nice smell coming up while brushing teeth..)
After 3 weeks we are perfectly aware the Iceland hotel offering is very far away from current international standards and we are happy to adapt but this hotel is really below par and actually the worst of the 8 hotels we booked over our 3 weeks tour. It is also the most expensive (including all other and much nicer hotel we found).
Shame on you “Mr or Mrs owner” milking the tourist is never a good idea especially in a tiny country where most of your gdp comes from tourism
A 3.8 rating is still way too much. I did put a 5 so I’m sure my review is red by prospective guests. Cannot wait some nice local or international hotel brands offer some competition and put you out of business.
What else?
Asked for a refund of 1 night out of the 2 paid for 300$, you guess the answer.
Barmaid makes poor cocktails
Breakfast (always included in Icelandic hotels) was very average and the only hotel where we had to pay for an espresso, all others had nice big professional machines offering anything you like).
Unless you really need to go to this remote city I would suggest any other destination in the beautiful west fjords as this city is not worthy all the time and extra miles driven to go and come back
